Title: Today Fifty-Five

Summary: We change and we don't change.

October 8, 2005, 9:32am.

His eyes haven't changed: this is Darry's first thought. Somehow he has never quite realized this until now. Maybe because it's been far too long since he's seen Soda. But now he says it, clapping his brother's shoulder: "You know, your eyes have never changed, not all your life."

"Neither have yours," Soda says with a grin, and his smile is the same, too, even if there are more and deeper lines around it now. "Or Pony's. Maybe nobody's ever do. What d'you think, Ponyboy?"

Ponyboy comes over to the table, setting down the plates of breakfast. "I think we change and we don't change," he says cryptically, hiding a smile of his own.

"That's such a writerly thing to say it makes me sick."

"Yeah, well."

They sit down, dishing out ham and eggs and chocolate cake onto their plates. "Your doctor will kill you if he finds out about this, Soda," says Darry. We change.

"Shoot," says Soda, "who cares? It's my birthday"; and he puts grape jelly on his eggs. We don't change.

They look at one another. Darry's kitchen is warm and glowing, and they can't hear the wives and children and baby grandchildren down the hall, and it's almost like they're young boys again in their rough-and-tumble Tulsa neighborhood, getting ready to rush off to roof houses and pump gas and daydream through class. And they smile, and Soda lifts his fork in a silent toast before taking the first bite.

All characters are the property of S.E. Hinton.
