Title: Lock the Doors
Fandom: The Outsiders
Characters: Ponyboy, Johnny
Prompt: Touch
Word Count: 199
Rating: G
Summary: The weight of a moment sharpens the world into frightening clarity.
Author's Notes: Contains references to events at the end of the novel.

Every sensation is intensified. The air slides into his lungs cold and sharp and liquid-smooth. The rough dying grass seems to press in harsh edges through the knees of his jeans. The sting of November chill on his face, the taste of blood lingering on his lower lip, the shrieks of kids playing down the street on the other side of the buildings, the burning grey noon light - everything is sharpened, clarified, maximized eighteen times over. And he feels the weight of a moment more heavily than he has since Dally lay bleeding under the street-light.

A shudder in his heart. His eyes are wide.

Johnny walks forward, silent and with a grace he never possessed in life. His own eyes are dark and pleading, and his lips part.

"Don't let him."

The words don't spill into the open space of the lot properly. They don't echo anywhere. They catch in the air and cloud around Johnny, sticking near him. But he reaches out a hand - and his flesh is whole, unburned - and he says again in that wordless way, "Don't let him."

The fingertips touch Ponyboy's forehead, and suddenly he can't feel anything at all.

All characters are the property of S.E. Hinton.

It's okay, it's not supposed to make sense, I guess. It's a bit of warm-up, I guess, for a longer story I'm hoping to eventually write.

No, Ghost!Johnny won't be dancing ballet. Unfortunately.
